KARL'S FUND is available to any Ugandan dog guardian in need of financial assistance to receive services for their dog (or cat).
Whenever we receive donations earmarked for spay/neuter, these go towards Karl’s Fund. The fund pays the difference between the BIG FIX hospital’s cost for caring for an animal and what a guardian can afford to pay. If there is no guardian or if the guardian cannot afford anything, Karl’s Fund covers the entire cost. It is an honor system, with people being asked to contribute what they can afford without causing a financial hardship. Karl’s Fund only applies to local people (Ugandans) who have a need for financial assistance.
the origins of karl's fund
The founder of Karl's Fund is one of the key driving forces behind Big Fix Uganda, Sarah Schmidt. In 2010, Sarah adopted an 8-year old Dachshund from Southern California Dachshund Relief who had been abandoned at a kill shelter by the only family he had ever known. His crime was that he had bitten the family’s grandchild when the child was allowed to torment him. (Dachshunds are known for asserting their rights, sometimes in ways that people find unacceptable.) This poor guy, then with another name, was frantic, trying to get out of the kennel where he found himself alone, trying to get back to his family. Like most Dachshunds, he didn’t trust anyone he didn’t know and his behavior was perceived as vicious. The shelter used a catch-pole to restrain him, which further traumatized him. Fortunately, a representative of Dachshund rescue was able to remove him from the shelter. He quickly fell in love with her and was lovely and sweet, but he remained traumatized and could never again be crated or left in a small space without suffering with severe anxiety.
The rescue volunteer sent a photograph of the dog to Sarah, who had just recently lost another much-beloved Dachshund after a long and difficult illness. Sarah didn’t think she was ready to adopt another but couldn’t get that photo out of her mind, for some reason. After a couple of days, Sarah told her rescue friend she wanted to adopt this poor boy. He was in Central California and Sarah was in Washington state so they met in Oregon, where Sarah first saw the dog she named
and took him home.
Karl was a huge blessing in Sarah's life and she loved him dearly. When he went blind, she set up her house so that he could navigate around it independently, by putting rolled-up blankets in the corners so every space was a soft oval around allowing him to find his way around.
Everyone who knew Sarah also knew about Karl.
When Karl passed away, Sarah and her dear friends and family members contributed to a memorial fund in honor of Karl. Sarah adds to the fund annually and any donations towards it are very gratefully received. Karl’s Fund has now empowered people who cannot afford treatments for their cats and dogs to receive full services at the BIG FIX hospital in Northern Uganda, so that no animal has to face abandonment or be denied services.
