Our Code of Conduct
At The BIG FIX Uganda, our mission to improve the health and welfare of people and animals is built on trust, compassion, and integrity. Every staff member, volunteer, partner, and visitor is expected to uphold these standards:
1. Animal Welfare First The safety, health, and dignity of every animal are paramount. We strictly prohibit any form of cruelty, neglect, or unnecessary stress. All medical procedures and handling follow strict, established international veterinary protocols for humane practices.
2. Professionalism & Respect We treat colleagues, community members, donors, and partners with dignity and respect. Discrimination, harassment, bullying, or abusive behavior of any kind will not be tolerated. We foster an inclusive environment where diverse voices are valued and mental health is valued.
3. Safety & Accountability We prioritize the physical safety of our teams and the communities we serve. Staff must adhere to all safety guidelines, wear appropriate protective gear, and report hazards or incidents immediately.
4. Integrity & Transparency We act with honesty in all financial, operational, and clinical matters. Resources are used solely for their intended purpose. We maintain detailed, accurate records and communicate openly with our stakeholders.
5. Community Partnership We engage with local communities respectfully, listening to their needs and leading with cultural contexts. We strive to build lasting partnerships based on mutual trust and shared goals.
Environmental Policy: A One Health Approach
Our Commitment
We recognize that human, animal, and environmental health are deeply interconnected. Protecting ecosystems is essential to preventing disease, safeguarding biodiversity, and ensuring the long-term well-being of the communities and animals we serve. Our environmental stewardship is a core component of our mission.
Guiding Principles
Safe Medical Waste Disposal All pharmaceuticals and biological waste from our hospital, laboratory, and vaccination/surgical clinics are disposed of according to veterinary and environmental safety protocols. We prevent contamination of soil and water sources to protect both wildlife and community health.
Disease Prevention Through Environmental Hygiene We maintain rigorous sanitation at all clinic sites to reduce environmental pathogen transmission. Clean environments reduce zoonotic disease spread, supporting healthier human and animal populations.
Responsible Chemical Management Anesthetics, disinfectants, and medications are stored, handled, and disposed of properly to prevent environmental leakage. Expired or unused pharmaceuticals are processed through certified disposal channels.
Resource Efficiency We minimize single-use materials where medically safe, prioritize reusable supplies when possible, and reduce fuel consumption through efficient route planning for field clinics.
Community Education We integrate environmental health messaging into community outreach, promoting practices that benefit families, our land, and animals alike.
Accountability Staff are trained on environmental protocols, and compliance is monitored during all operations. We continuously seek ways to reduce our ecological footprint while maximizing health outcomes.
